Recent Movies Watched

Last night I watched China Doll (1958), which I'm proud to say I now own, with Victor Mature. I've seen it once before, but I absolutely love it. The ending is so sad, though. It gets me teared up every time. It even got my mother tearing up a little bit. I honestly don't know where Leonard Maltin comes off by giving it only 1.5/4 stars. It most definitely deserves more than that! And anyone who says Victor can't act, you seriously need to watch this film and wait until you get to the ending.

Okay, so I just watched 'A Star Is Born' 1937. Wow! I loved it! It was amazing! I cried like a baby through the whole ending... and I never cry in movies! It was so touching and I'd go on and on about it, but I don't want to spoil the ending. A beautiful yet tragic film and I highly recommend it!!!!!!!

We watched:
"A Stolen Life"-1946- Bette & Glenn Ford: An amazing "way" to put "both" roles together: Bette plays twin sisters, and you CAN,T notice the tricks !!!!- A wonderful story, very well at the beggining, very interesting plot BUT the ending is a dissapointment: too quick and "easy" for a plot like that- I really don,t care about that ending: Did they know HOW to end it?... I guess not-- Bette is wonderful, also Ford-
"Scarlett Street"-1945- Edward G Robinson & Joan Bennett: one of the best film-noirs- A tricky plot, very interesting characters and Dan Duyrea plays the SAME "cad" as in The Little Foxes !!!!! - Both stars are just wonderful-

The last films I've seen are last week's Weekend Theater Presenting Lily Mars (1943) with Van Heflin and Judy Garland. I LOVED this film. I thought Judy was just beautiful in it, and I found a new actor in Van Heflin, and the two of them together was just MAGNIFICENT!

I also watched The West Point Story (1950), which I now own, with Gordon MacRae, James Cagney, Doris Day, and Virginia Mayo. I also LOVED this film. It was so so so funny. James was superb as always, and I think they were giving Gordon the star treatment in this film because he was photographed beautifully, they kept commenting on how beautiful his voice was in the film, and he was given some great moments on screen.

Was in the mood to be amused, so I rewatched My Geisha, with Yves Montand and Shirley McLaine and a lovely older Edward G. Robinson. I know it's not PC to todays standards but I just love it.

If you haven't seen it: it's about a very succesful couple, she's a Hollywood actress, he's a director. They are always working together, and he has a bit of a crisis because he thinks Hollywood only hires him because of his wife. He wants to make a film without her, set in Japan about Mme Butterfly. He is looking for a Japanese girl to play the part. Shirley is angry about this, and punishes him by auditioning dressed as a geisha. He hires her without knowing that she is his wife. She goes to Japan and whilst filming takes lessons with a real geisha. Edward plays their friend and he knows her secret. Her disguise leads to funny situations because she looks the part but doesn't speak any Japanese. It's a warm but also poignant film.

Last night I saw "The Seventh Veil", 1945- A wonderful British film- James Mason with this film becomes a Star, and lovely Ann Todd made a wonderful perfomance- Everything is right in this film- Amazingly it was done after Bombs destroyed all British Movie Studios- I love this film-

I finished watching Night Song (1947) with Dana Andrews, Merle Oberon, Hoagy Carmichael, and Ethel Barrymore last night. I really enjoyed it. Dana was amazing as per usual, and I just love Hoagy Carmichael.

I just finished watching Bus Stop (1956) with Marilyn Monroe, Don Murray, and Arthur O'Connell. I really liked it. Marilyn was wonderful, and Don Murray fluctuated back and forth from me liking him to finding him annoying--in the end, the former won out. The last few scenes he had with Marilyn are very sweet. He was basically just a kid who still how to sow his wild roots. It was also really nice seeing Arthur O'Connell. In the end, I'd recommend that you'd watch this picture.

As it was MM weekend, I rewatched The Seven Year Itch on tv. I really like it, because it is about the fantasy life of this man in a midlife crisis, I like the way he keeps talking to himself and the image of his wife. He likes to think of himself as a babe magnet, but he clearly isn't. And Marilyn is not at all behaving like she is in his fantasies. The fantasy seduction scene at the piano is my favourite.
