I love that Scarlett is the way she is. She is a bright, feisty, spoilt young girl who's world gets turned upside down. Since all the men are gone to fight, she takes charge, partly because of her character, partly because no one else will/can. Her mother is dead, her father is insane, her sisters don't have the tenacity. If it had not been for Scarlett they would have died of starvation and Tara would have been up for grabs. Scarlett has no one to lean on for support, all her friends and relatives are weaker than she is. She has to be strong all the time, whilst being so scared. And the only way to do that is to disassociate from her feelings. This makes her hard. But underneath that she is still a scared young girl still living the horrors of war, and Rhett is the only one who understands. But in the end, even his patience runs out.

 - AMAZING ANSWER !!- I am going to write more later- But let me say something: you are right: Scarlett is a scared girl, and in one scene she really shows how she really is: when she went to entertain Ashley the day of his birthday: He began to talk about the PAST... about the "Golden days..." , "the security of those days"..and she becomes very depress as she, as you said, hide her actual feelings, but there..hearing Ashley talking about the past (a terrible thing if you "don,t want to look back") she couldn,t control her feelings- Her face changes in a second.. her voice trembles... THAT girl IS SCARLETT !!!- I always find that scene.. very "clear", very "direct".. -
You wrote: ".. the only way to do that is to disassociate from her feelings"- HOW INTERESTING !!!!!- Can you tell me more about it?- Because Scarlett is perfectly capable to love people ( not to mention Tara: sometimes a place, a house..is the same as a person: I KNOW that..cause I am suffering every day the lost of my grandparents house), as was evident with Mammy, Bonnie, her father, her mother, ( not Ashley..that is not love...) even with Pork (to give him her father,s watch !!).. so, what do you think?: Scarlett tried to hide her loving heart?... ??????????- I find very interesting to discuss GWTW with you- !! :P

So do I, so do I! :D :geek:

When we experience enduring trauma, like war, we tend to feel intense fear. This paralyses us. So in order to be able to act, you have to repress that fear. Subconciously you make the decision to not feel fear. And when you do this every day, after a while, you don't feel fear anymore, you automaticly get into action, it becomes your coping mechanism. (your body still recognizes fear, but your head doesn't, this leads to all kind of psychosomatic problems, but that's another discussion)
And this is what we see in Scarlett, her fear is repressed during the war in order to survive and protect her family and home. After the war she has nightmares, which are a clear sign of repression. And you can see her coping mechanism after the war as well. Whenever she feels fear, her face hardens and she springs into action.

Scarlett is perfectly capable of loving people. She loves Pork and Mammy, her family. She loves Bonnie, Rhett and Melanie. And she loves the image of Ashley that she has in her head, not Ashley himself.

What are your thoughts on this?

I really hate picking favorites! I'd have to go with...

-White Christmas
-Red Garters
-Meet Me in St. Louis
-The Thin Man
-Meet John Doe/Ball of Fire

I'm gonna come back tomorrow and change them though. Just so I can list all my favorites. :D And you can't stop me! :character-oldtimer: (I actually just wanted to use my granddad there. From my Aunt Rosie's side.)

It is extremely difficult to only pick five favorite movies, but some that top my list would be:
~Manhattan Melodrama
~Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
~Bringing Up Baby
~ Singing in the Rain
~The Thin Man

The list could go on and on and ...

I realy like your list, quite a few favourites of mine, too. But I hardly ever read about someone really liking Scrooge with Albert Finney. I absolutely adore that film, watch it every year!!! :P
