:D This is so fascinating. David Niven fought in the war too, right? I'd absolutely love part four!

Jimmy Stewart and Tyrone Powers are a couple of others that also actively fought in the war :)

Thank you for all those informations Carlos, I love them! :D
And it always fascinated me how many wonderful actors reached Hollywood because of WWII & Hitler. I only knew really about Marlene Dietrich, Louise Rainer & Hedy Lamarr. But Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer!? :o Total surprise for me!

That figures!

Yes, he was from Canada- The great surprise for me is Ray Milland beeing British !!: I would never guess it !!- uncle-

PS: remember my niece THAT Canadian actress I told u before: Genevieve Bujold: one of the TOPS !!-

Oh I haven't forgotten Uncle but I still haven't seen anything with her... One day I promise! One day!
For some reason I always thought Ray Millard was British but never knew for sure. Maybe it's cause I've seen him as a 'British chap' in some roles

I don,t think Canada and The States are soooo close: Canada is a mix between Europe & America- USA is absolutely "America"-hehe. :D
My parents always told me that Canada is the best place to live: they went 3 times- However.. in The States I found 2 or 3 places I can live-COMPLETELY- The best place is all the West Coast, from Los Angeles to San Francisco :P : lovely places, trees, houses !!- Another is Virginia (I lived there for 2 months) and... San Francisco: I love it !!- Also Boston, Connecticut....UUUFFFF-
Savannah, Charleston.....

I find some parts of America quite similar, but other places like southern US can seem quite different!!!
Yes Uncle, I agree with your parents... Canada is the BEST place to live :D :D :D :D :D

Uncle,

Was Miss Dietrich a spy during WWII ? Is this true, or a joke? If it is true, here is my reaction:

NOOO, it,s NOT a joke: Some of the European Stars were spies cause the language- I mean.. it was easier for a German Star to go frecuently to Germany, or to Sweden (in case of Garbo) to "visit" her family- They "came" and "go" without any suspicion- Dietrich, Garbo, Lamarr were spies (I think I,m writing bad the word "spies"...) since 1932 to 1940. In case of Garbo ..she was a spy since 1932 to 1945: it,s a common knowledge that she leaves Metro NOT because her last film was a failure, but because Goverment gaves her a "more important work to do"-
A lot of other Stars helps Allies through an active work with the Resistence ( the civil-troops) in France, Germany (NOT everybody in Germany was a nazi!!), Austria, England..etc- For example: Alexander Korda made "That Hamilton Woman" as a propaganda AGAINST Hitler: for that reason he was awarded by British Goverment AND Hitler put a "price" on his head-
Leslie Howard was another (tragic) case: He was a spy, an active member of the Resistence. But in one of his flyings from Lisbon to London(doing his "work) his plane was shot by the nazis and he died with many more passengers, in 1943. The nazis said that "they thought Churchill was in that plane": nonsense !!: they knew all about Howard,s activity.
Vivien Leigh was another case: she was a Resistence member in France (as she speaks perfectly french), and she went to Paris and other cities to make theatre in the subways for the civilians against Hitler (remember that in 1940 Paris was taken by nazis), so she spent half of the war hiding her identity, doing work for the Resistence and in London she also made a LOT of work, for Allies, (that was only known AFTER the war)- France gaves her the most important award for a civilian, after the war-
By the way: the first "Star casuality" of the war was Carole Lombard (1942)- Leslie Howard was the second (1943)- The Goverment had plans to send Ingrid Bergman to Sweden in 1943.. but they "have second thoughts" after Howard,s death-
Isn,t it fascinating this topic?-
And yes: As David says: Power and Stewart had an active fight in the War, but as soldiers or officers. Same as Robert Stack,Robert Taylor, Gable, Mickey Rooney, and a "cast of thousands"- hehe :P
And we CAN,T forget Audrey Hepburn,s active work during the war: she was a child, doing ballet in Holland, hiding information for the Dutch Resistence in her ballet shoes!!: once..a German soldier catch her and she was nearly to be killed (all her brothers and an uncle were killed by nazis), but the german soldier distracted for a moment and Audrey runs like hell to a near-forest, and she stayed, there, hiding, for a week, saving her life-
